Frequently Asked Questions
Why SeaStar?
SeaStar’s founder and owner Niki Tucker has over twenty years of experience working with seniors and vulnerable adults. She is a fully licensed social worker and certified care manager. During her career she has worked as a private care manager, care coordinator for low-income senior housing, professional legal guardian, and executive director of an assisted living facility. Niki also previously helped set up and run another successful home care and care management company for over a decade.
Client safety and well-being are our primary focus. Everything SeaStar does is with that commitment in mind – from hiring, training, supervising staff to daily policies and procedures – to ensure that clients' needs are always met to the highest standards.
How do you match caregivers with clients?
Prior to assigning a companion to a client, we do a full assessment of the client's physical, emotional, and cognitive needs. This information helps ensure that the companion we send is able to provide the necessary care to meet these needs. Companions are also selected based on their skills, experience, and personality. If for some reason the client doesn't think the pairing is a good fit, they have the right to request a replacement.
Is there a minimum number of hours required for your services?
SeaStar does require a minimum shift of two hours for outings, and four hours for in-home visits. No other commitments are required. While some agencies expect clients to sign on to a package deal, we do not.
Who are your care managers?
Anyone can call themselves a "care manager," because there is no formal license or educational requirement to perform this type of work. In fact, many professional care managers got their start while taking care of their own aging parents, and then later offered that service to other families.
At SeaStar, we believe that a comprehensive assessment and robust care plan are crucial to ensuring that clients' needs are met. To achieve this, we hire people who have earned a Master's in Social Work because they have been educated specifically in how to conduct thorough assessments and create individualized care plans.
MSWs have also been trained to understand the importance of social justice, advocacy, integrity, dignity, competency, service, and self-worth of the individual. You can rest assured that SeaStar staff provides the highest level of professional service.
Is SeaStar locally owned?
SeaStar Senior Services is not a franchise, so there are no extra fees to pay or pass along to our clients. We are also free to modify our services to accommodate clients based on their needs – our policies weren't written by someone who's never stepped foot in the Pacific Northwest. We provide services in the Portland Metro area, including Clark County, Washington.
What is the process for hiring a caregiver?
Vetted employees
SeaStar provides full training to all employees, including CPR. We do background checks and conduct drug tests prior to hiring anyone. For any employee who drives clients, we also check their driving record and add them to our insurance policy. Further, we check references and pay well above minimum wage in order to attract the best team members.
What if a companion is sick or unavailable?
When choosing SeaStar, the client gets the peace of mind of knowing that no shift will ever go uncovered. If a caregiver becomes unavailable, one of our other trained staff will help out during their absence.
What is care management?
Care management is a service that helps clients with special needs achieve the highest quality of life and independence possible. Our care managers coordinate all the services that clients might need, including scheduling and transportation to medical appointments, plus ensuring that follow-up visits or specialty appointments are made.
We help clients set up other services such as home care or moving assistance, and also provide consultation services for families as they navigate the unchartered waters of parental aging.
